Class IV Deep Tissue Laser and the treatment of Raynaud’s syndrome

The Lightforce class IV deep tissue laser has been used successfully for the treatment of tendinosis/tendinitis, acute injury, and overuse injuries. Deep tissue laser works by using focused light to stimulate a process called photobiomodulation (PBM). During PBM, photons enter the tissue and interact with the cytochrome c complex within mitochondria. This interaction triggers a biological cascade of events that leads to an increase in cellular metabolism, decrease in pain, reduction in muscle spasm, and improved microcirculation to injured tissue.

Due to these effects of the laser on the human body, we have also found that it can be extremely effective in the treatment of Raynaud’s syndrome.

In Raynaud’s phenomenon, smaller arteries that supply blood to the skin constrict excessively in response to cold, limiting blood supply to the affected area. Raynaud’s often causes blanching of the skin, numbness, severe pain, and in some cases blistering to the skin. Most often symptoms occur in the fingers and toes.

The easiest way to prevent common Raynaud’s attacks are by keeping the body warm, wearing layers, keeping the head covered, wearing Smart Wool socks, and limiting time spent outdoors in the cold or in air conditioning. There are also topical creams/steroids that can be prescribed and applied to affected areas, but these do little to solve the root cause of the problem (limited blood supply to peripheral tissue).

If these things alone are not helping to mitigate Raynaud’s attacks, by increasing the blood supply with deep tissue laser, Raynaud’s symptoms are often reduced or completely abolished.

Because of the power of a class IV laser, treatment sessions are fast, often completed in as little as 3-5 minutes. Raynaud’s can be treated successfully in as many as 6 laser treatment sessions, but improvements are often noticed immediately upon completion of just one deep tissue laser treatment.
